You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give. ~ Winston Churchill

Volunteerism

Volunteering is the most fundamental act of citizenship and philanthropy.  It is the offering of time, energy and skills of one's own free will.  By caring and contributing to change, volunteers gain skills, self-esteem and change their lives.  People may work to improve the lives of their neighbours and, in return, enhance their own.

Why Volunteer

Communities need your help and support!  Volunteering allows us to participate in the nurturing of our environment while bringing people together.    It allows us to give of ourselves, share our wealth and express the human values of community and caring.   Working together with others, we can also find solutions to shared challenges.  Your talents and dedication to volunteering are guaranteed to make a difference in your lives and the lives of others.

What We Offer Our Volunteers

Whether you choose to volunteer to support a cause, share your knowledge, meet new people, or to develop new skills you will be rewarded with a fulfilling and meaningful experience.

Volunteering can contribute to your individual and professional development and provide valuable work experience for students or those entering the work force.  It offers a great environment to connect with like - minded individuals.

For those participating as volunteers, references can be provided upon request.

You will gain great personal satisfaction while giving of yourself, your energy and your time as part of the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts volunteer program.  We look forward to meeting you!

Volunteer Opportunities at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts

Please note that the availability of event, theatre and program volunteer opportunities vary throughout the year.

FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS
Visual Arts
There is an opportunity for an audio-visual student familiar with video editing software to assist in this area.

Community/Outreach
There are opportunities for youth who are earning their CAP hours for graduation at the Spring Break Program.  These volunteers must be willing to commit to 8 hours per day for the 5 day program and will assist the arts instructor.  They must also enjoy working with children.

THEATRE
Ushers
Ushers provide assistance to the Front of House Supervisor by directing and assisting patrons, tearing tickets, distributing programs, enforcing house rules (i.e. no food or drinks in the house) and carrying out miscellaneous duties.  The goal of this position is to enrich audience experience and increase the safety of theatre patrons.   In return, the usher may attend and enjoy the live performance.

SPECIAL EVENTS
There are a multitude of community events and festivals throughout the year.  Volunteers are required in a variety of areas including:

Children’s Activity Assistant – assists with hands-on art activities and other activities as per the requirements of the activity leader, instructor or supplier.

Art Activity Preparation   assists with advance preparation of materials and supplies for art activities.

Festival Site Host/Hostess – assists patrons seeking event information and directions on-site in a positive, welcoming manner.

Public Survey – assists in the implementation of public surveys.

The Shadbolt Effect

“For me it was a magical night. After training all year long, our presentation was so amazing. The music, choreography, costumes, lights, and scenery made the atmosphere out of this world. It was an outstanding electric show.”

- Andrea, age 9
