Judith M. Atkinson
Judith graduated with honours in painting from Emil Carr Institute of Art and Design, trained at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts, studied printmaking in Florence, Italy, and graduated from the Commercial Animation program at Capilano College. Judith has a long exhibition record of paintings, sculptures, prints and large multimedia installations. She has taught at the Shadbolt since 1979.
Polly Faminow
Polly Faminow, artist and arts educator, graduated from The Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.) She majored in Printmaking and is a mixed-media artist working in drawing, painting, collage and printmaking. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in Ontario & British Columbia and is represented in The Art Bank, Ottawa, Ontario as well as in private collections in Canada and abroad. Polly's extensive teaching experience spans three decades and includes her experience as an Outreach Instructor for Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design as well as teaching children's classes at The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. This spring she is teaching the Saturday Pencils, Paints and Plasticine classes at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts where she introduces young artists to the basic techniques of drawing, painting, collage and sculpture while encouraging the development of creativity and self-expression.
Laurryn Gerzymisch
Laurryn is an artist and craftsperson who has spent much of her creative youth exploring memory and fiction in her creative film work. Excited by the recent resurgence of craft in popular culture, she is currently working with found materials to produce interesting textile garments. Laurryn graduated from the film media program at Emily Carr College for Art + Design in 2004. When she is not teaching art classes at the Shadbolt Centre she can be found playing with her daughter or devouring every last page of the most recent ReadyMade magazine. This Spring Laurryn will be teaching Creative Textiles – Everything But The Sewing Machine as well as Pencils, Paints & Plasticine.
Sharon Greig
Sharon Greig studied textile design at Capilano College, as well as Graphic Design at the Vancouver School of Art. Her work is exhibited in galleries in Vancouver, as well as Victoria. Sharon began instructing in Fine Arts in the early 1990s. She has taught clay, drawing and painting, general arts, printmaking as well as cartooning to children, youth, and adults.
Eleanor Hannan
Eleanor is a visual artist who also works in embroidery. She has a BFA from the University of Manitoba and has exhibited in numerous locations in Canada, the U.C.A. and the UK. She has received several grants to aid in the creation of work, the most recent being a Visual Arts Grant from the BC Arts Council. A devoted and committed teacher, Eleanor also teaches in the Textile Arts PRogram at Capilano College, Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design and in the Fashion Design Program at the University College of the Fraser Valley.
Jay Johnson
Jay learned how to make moving contraptions by taking things apart as a kid. He went on to graduate from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1993. His kinetic sculpture and video work have been exhibited in Canada, the United States and Europe. His teaching experience includes sessional classes for children at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and within the Vancouver public school system.
Mimi Kemball
Mimi's commitment to arts instruction and her patience and joy while working with children make her an asset to the Direct Community Programs. Trained at the Alberta College of Art, she spent her early years designing and instructing art classes at the Edmonton Art Gallery. Since moving here in 1997 she has taught Visual Arts programs to many lucky children in Burnaby schools and centres.
Mona Lochan
A graduate of Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design with majors in Photography and Installation, Mona continues to explore her chosen disciplines. She has instructed at Arts Umbrella, developed and instructed art programs for troubled youth and instructs in all visual arts mediums including ceramics for the Direct Community Arts Programs. Mona instructed the visual arts component of KIDZART from 2000-2003.
Jim Maunder
Jim Maunder is a grduate of the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and has been an exhibiting artist and art educator for nearly 20 years. Since moving to Vancouver from St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador in August 2006 with his wife and daughter, Jim has been busy teaching classes and workshops at several community centres, working as an artist-in-residence at UBC, and creating new works of art. He recently participated in the Artists in our Midst open studio weekend in West Point Grey.
Julieanne McGuinness
Julieanne's background in the arts is varied and includes studies in interior and jewellery design, pottery, weaving and metalwork. She is an active member and frequent exhibitor at the Federation of Canadian Artists and has received many awards and commissions as well as recognition from a worldwide audience for her work in watercolour. She has been teaching the continuing level of watercolours at the Shadbolt Centre since the fall of 2000.
Peter Mintchev
Peter was born in Bulgaria, where he grew up until he moved to Canada in 1998. He graduated with a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia. Peter's artwork is focused on painting and drawing and he has exhibited in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Peter is currently working on multiple art projects and in addition to teaching at the Shadbolt Centre instructs at Malaspina and Kwantlen Colleges.
Elora Penland
Having earned her diploma of fine art from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1996 Elora went on to work as an instructor for the Vancouver Art Gallery, Burnaby Art Gallery, Arts Umbrella, Bonsor Recreation Centre and the Shadbolt Centre. She is a former member of CORE Artist's Live/Work Co-op and has been involved in numerous exhibitions including group shows at the Glass Onion Gallery, Roundhouse Community Centre, Mainspace, Dynamo Gallery and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. In the last year she was involved in the Journeys Theatre project helping the students at Edmonds School with the set design and at Douglas Road School helping the Grade sevens with painting their Good Will Tree legacy project.
Jacquie Rolston
A native of Burnaby, Jacquie Rolston studied animation at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Her work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the National Film Board of Canada. Besides her personal animation projects, Jacquie illustrates for a local magazine. When not animating or illustrating, Jacquie teaches art and animation through a variety of community organizations.
Tony O'Regan
Well-known artist/instructor Tony O'Regan's extensive background in art and design spans more than 25 years as an exhibiting artist, teacher and senior designer with a major architectural firm. Tony is an honours graduate in painting with a Masters degree in design, and has designed numerous civic buildings over the years, including the Richmond Library and Cultural Centre, Clearbrook Library, and many others. Tony teaches regularly at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design and SFU City Program. His particular interest is in combining nature with the human figure and architecture, in both abstract and representative modes.
Marianne Otterstrom
A graduate of the Langara Fine Arts Program with a focus on sculpture and print making, Marianne has kept her imprint on the arts while raising four children. She has taught for the Shadbolt Centre since 1989, was the Coordinator of Prison Arts Foundation for ten years, has built theatre props and undertaken drawing commissions. Marianne also volunteers countless hours at Forest Grove Elementary School with the student art gallery, school murals, and other arts/child related activities.
Charles Rea
A popular member of our teaching staff for many years, Charles was educated at the Vancouver School of Art. He has also taught at U.B.C. and Arts Umbrella. Charles is a hard-working artist with a long list of exhibitions to his credit, both locally and as far away as West Germany and Japan. His vast knowledge of art and his own experience as an artist, make his classes a special opportunity for students.
Nancy Ruen-Fen Chen
Nancy was born in Taiwan where she studied under the master painter, Huei-Tung Chen. She also studied art in Montreal and continued her study of Chinese painting in Vancouver. She is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Nancy works primarily in watercolours on Chinese rice paper combining both traditional and contemporary techniques and has shown both locally and internationally. Nancy conducts workshops and demonstrations throughout Canada and the United States.
Lorraine Schneider
With a BA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and her commitment as an arts educator, Lorraine has brought a wealth of experience to the Direct Community Arts Programs. She has worked as a volunteer Super Sunday Educator/Facilitator at the Vancouver Art Gallery since 1995, is now instructing the Burnaby Art Gallery workshops, educational and summer programs and instructs a variety of visual arts programs at schools throughout Burnaby.
Katherine Surridge
Katherine received her BFA, painting major, from the University of Victoria, did a Master's Residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute and studied Video at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design. Her work has been exhibited throughout Canada and the United States and is in many collections including the Canada Council Art BAnk, BC Provincial Collection, BC Lottery Foundation and the Art Galleries of Burnaby, Edmonton, Victoria and Richmond. Katherine has combined her painting with the art of making films (some shown on national television) and has taught through the Vancouver School Board, Victoria College of Art, and Surrey Continuing Education. She currently instructs programs at the Burnaby Art Gallery and through Direct Community Programs.
Shelley Twist
A graduate of Emily Carr Institute of Arts & Design, Shelley has been facilitating and instructing arts programs for the City of Burnaby since 2000. Whether facilitating community mosaics, leading school workshops at the Burnaby Art Gallery, instructing during KIDZART or instructing a variety of visual arts programs at schools and centres throughout Burnaby, Shelley brings her special blend of knowledge, experience, patience and humour to each situation.
Maggie White
Maggie White was born in England and educated at St. Albans School of Art and St. Martins School of Art in London, studying fine art, commercial art and design. She is best known for land and seascapes and creating works that capture space, subtle colouring, tranquility and mood. Maggie had her first one-woman show of paintings in England, before immigrating to Canada in 1975. She has been elected to A.F.C.A. standing by the Federation of Canadian Artists and is a signature member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. Maggie is now a Canadian citizen and an award-winning watercolourist living on the west coast of Canada.
Betty Woo
Born in China, Betty immigrated to Vancouver in 1968. She is a graduate of Burnaby College in Graphics and the Vancouver School of Art, majoring in painting and sculpture. Since 1974, Betty has taught a variety of fine art programs at Kwantlen and Langara Colleges and the Richmond Art Centre. Her work has won awards and been shown locally and internationally, in solo and group shows, in both private and public galleries.
