23rd Annual
Burnaby Rhododendron Festival

Sunday, May 1, 2011, 9:30am - 4:00pm

This quaint green festival is produced by the City in collaboration with the Burnaby Rhododendron & Gardens Society, promoting the long-term sustainable, ecological health of our communities. The inaugural event took place in 1988 when the Burnaby Beautification Committee organized a contest to name a Rhododendron as Burnaby’s official floral symbol. It presents a very unique venue for both horticulture and arts groups. Environmental sustainability and sound ecological practices in gardening are embraced and promoted by the many organizations that participate. Festival highlights include variety musical entertainment, site rovers, mini workshops, horticultural and nature tours, commercial plant sales, and interactive arts activities. A silent auction, artisan, and pottery sales are always crowd-pleasing favourites at this fun-filled festival!  Free.

The Shadbolt Effect

“Participating in the firing process at the Shadbolt’s wood fire kiln, standing mesmerized watching the flames and holding the final result was worth all the early struggles with centering, throwing and pulling those initial ‘freeform’ pieces.”

- Gayle, "Birth of A Vase"
