Shadbolt Centre for the Arts has a number of kilns that are available for rent. Get the details here and view them in our Photo Gallery.
Electric Kilns
We have 5 top loading electric kilns ranging in size from 7-10 cuft. Two have programmable controllers. The kilns are available for bisque, low/medium, or high temperature glazing or crystalline firing.
Raku
Our easy riser Raku kiln is 20 inches in diameter by 26 inches tall. It is fuelled by natural gas and monitored with a digital pyrometer. The Shell opens and closes with an easy one-handed movement of the counterweight. The sandbox and metal containers are available for reduction. Bring your own combustible materials.
Tophat
The 18 cuft tophat style updraft kiln lifts off its base for ease of unloading. It is fired with natural gas and is suitable for cone 10 reduction firing. It is monitored with an oxyprobe and is great for copper reds.
Car Kiln
This 60 cuft downdraft car kiln rolls indoors for ease of loading. Suitable for large work. All firings in this kiln are loaded and fired to cone 10 reduction by the kiln technicians. Their time is included in the rental rate.
Sawdust Kiln
This is a 25 cuft brick box that uses sawdust as the fuel. Renters bring their own sawdust, free of preservatives, glues, or other contaminates.
Wood/Soda Ombu Kiln
The kiln was designed by Japanese kiln builder Masakazu Kusakabe. This is a two-chamber bourey box wood/soda kiln. The kiln can be fired with wood only, or can be preheated with natural gas. The wood chamber holds about 32 cuft of ware depending on the stacking. The 28 cuft soda chamber can be fired separately with natural gas. Firing the whole kiln takes approximately 33 hours, while the soda only takes approximately 12 hours with an overnight preheat.
