Dance Instructors

Daylan Braude
Daylan has been teaching Tap and Jazz at the Shadbolt Centre since 2000. In her youth, she danced and competed with various local studios; upon graduation, she continued her studies at SFU in the Contemporary Arts Program. After receiving her BFA in Modern Dance, Daylan explored new territory in Calgary with “Decidedly Jazz Danceworks” and “Youth Dance Unlimited”. Upon her return to BC, Daylan was involved with many local shows including 12 Minutes Max and Dancing on the Edge. Daylan currently teaches full-time in the lower mainland and continues to develop and hone her craft by attending dance workshops in the off-season.

Katie Brownhill
Katie is a graduate of SFU dance program and is now teaching ballet and yoga for the City of Burnaby. After graduation, Katie travelled to New York to dance in the Merce Cunningham intensive, and in the summer of 2007 traveled to Winnipeg to participate in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Teacher’s Seminar. When not teaching or training, Katie is rehearsing with dance collective 30Toes. During the 2006-07 season, 30Toes was awarded Artist in Residence at the Scotia Bank Dance Centre and completed an excellent year of creation and development.

Heather Carpenter

Heather is a graduate of the National Ballet School Teacher Training Program and the London Contemporary Dance School in England, from which she holds a choreography certificate. She holds her Intermediate and Associate Diploma Cecchetti teaching degrees. Heather has been teaching in the Lower Mainland for the past seven years.

Corinne Chepil
Corinne (a.k.a. Corinne Corinne the Dancing Machine/Queen) has taught a variety of dance and movement classes for over 25 years. She has studied ballet, modern, jazz, tap and circle dance, and is a graduate of the Dance Teacher Training Program (Grant MacEwan College, Edmonton) and SFU’s Dance Program. Corinne especially enjoys teaching and inspiring beginning students.

Sara Coffin
Sara Coffin has completed her BFA in dance at Simon Fraser University and Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (Dalhousie University). Ms. Coffin has worked with The Holy Body Tattoo, Mascall Dance, Susan Elliot, and the TILT sound + motion dance company. As a choreographer, she has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council, and was recipient of the 2005 emerging artist of the year award. Sara teaches children and adults, and her classes focuses on kinaesthetic awareness, bio mechanics, propelling with momentum and above all creative expression. Andrea Downie (Summer Session Only)
Andrea Downie is a certified teacher of the Simonson Technique, an organic approach to movement founded on principles of anatomy and kinesiology. Hailed as an intelligent and logical method to prepare the body for dance, this comprehensive technique emphasizes injury prevention and movement ease. Andrea also has a BFA in dance from Toronto’s York University and has completed the professional training program at Dance New Amsterdam in NYC. Andrea has performed with Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects, the Madura Dance Collective, Catherine Lee, in Just Push Play, 12 Minutes Max, and Dancing on the Edge. She is passionate about dance and has a great love of teaching, which she enthusiastically shares with her students in classes and workshops around the Lower Mainland.

Salome Diaz
Salome Diaz graduated from the Dance Program of the School Board of Education and National Institute for Fine Arts in Mexico City. She has been a freelance dancer and a dance instructor for over 20 years. Since 1992, she has worked and performed with Kokoro Dance Company, a butoh-based company under the direction of Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi, and taught dance at numerous dance schools and academies in the lower mainland. Join Salome at the Shadbolt Center for the Arts where she currently works as the new artistic director of Continuum Dance Company and the Instructor for Modern Dance: Latino.

Leslie Dyer
Leslie’s lifelong foray into dance has fuelled her passion for movement and life! She spent her youth at various dance studios, including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Regina Modern Danceworks, and eventually earned a BFA degree in Contemporary Dance from Concordia University in Montreal. Leslie then experimented with professional dance and teaching in Montreal and Victoria before moving to Vancouver in 1994. She is enjoying teaching modern technique at the Shadbolt Centre and leading the Youth in Motion Junior Company as Artistic Director.

Jenni Higgins
Jenni finished her early training with the Kidco Training Company in Victoria as well as with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Banff Centre for the Arts and Dancetheatre David Earle. In 2003 Jenni graduated from the University of Calgary with a B.A. in dance. She then made her way to London, England where she spent the next two years teaching and performing. Now back on the West Coast again, Jenni is excited to be teaching Tap and Ballet at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

Heather Kirkland
Heather is an independent dancer and has been teaching children and teens in the Vancouver Lower Mainland for 5 years. She trained and performed in the Arts Umbrella Dance Company and MainDance, and went on to graduate from the School of Toronto Dance Theatre. As a performer she has had the privilege of working with choreographers Julia Sasso, Andrew Gidday, John Ottmann and most recently, Wen Wei Wang, as well as many of Vancouver’s best emerging artists. She has also performed with LinkDance and has worked with the Jumpstart Apprenticeship Program. She is currently teaching modern dance and ballet, and is director of the Youth in Motion Intermediate and Senior companies. Heather is excited to share her passion for performance and healthy technique with her students.

Trevor Klushin
Trevor has been working as a modern dancer and choreographer for the past 18 years. He went to Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton where he received a Diploma in Dance Performance in 1992. He received the Evelyn Davis Scholarship for excellence in modern dance and choreography in 1993. He danced with Brian Webb Dance Co., Mile Zero Dance Co., and Ballet North. He has created over 40 dances in his career, presented in the Cayman Islands, Canada, Brazil, Holland, and US. He has done independent films and commercials. A Creative Dance specialist, his passion is creating dances and teaching. Also known as Mr. Trevor by his students and their parents, he has been teaching his love of dance to young children at the Shadbolt Centre for the past nine years.

Karen Kobel
Karen has been dancing for the past 25 years, teaching for the past 13 years and performing. With a BFA in Dance Performance from East Carolina University, she has performed for various artists such as Mia Michaels, Jay Norman, Marjon Van Grunsven, Tomi Galaska, Mary Carbonaro, Peter Grey Terhune Presents on the Regal Princess and Crown Princess Cruise ships, Madora, and some other local artists. She is also a STOTT certified Pilates instructor. Karen has also studied with Lynn Simonson, Mary Carbonaro, Katiti King, all Simonson certified instructors.

Jane Osborne
Jane holds a BFA in dance from SFU and is now pursuing a career as a contemporary dancer. Since graduating, Jane has worked with various artists such as Martha Carter (apprenticeship), Rob Kitsos and Chengxin Wei, during Dancing on the Edge, and at the Hong Kong Dance Festival. Jane recently apprenticed on a collaborative project by Alvin Tolentino and Peter Chin, she apprentices in an ongoing fashion with dance-theatre artist, Tara Cheyenne-Friedenberg, and most recently with Dancers Dancing. In March 2007, Jane completed her first dance film “Drive7”, which has screened at several festivals internationally. Jane has been teaching and assisting at Community Centres around the Lower Mainland for the past year, instructing children of all ages in Ballet, Creative Movement, Jazz and Hip Hop — and she absolutely loves it!

Donna Redlick
Donna Redlick is a Certified Movement Analyst from the Laban Institute of Movement Studies, a graduate from the dance program at Grant MacEwan College of Fine Arts (Edmonton) and a graduate from the University of Saskatchewan. She was the founder of Continuum Dance Company and artistic director of the Youth In Motion Dance Company for many years. Donna has also taught for MainDance, Vancouver School Board, as an assistant instructor for the Laban Program at Ryerson University, and currently as a sessional instructor at Simon Fraser University.

Marcia F W.Jones
Marcia is passionate about dance and sharing it with adults, children and infants. She has over 10 years experience learning and practicing body-focused therapies and dance/movement. She has trained in Brain-Compatible Dance Education and Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT). She also holds a professional certificate in Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP). As a board member of Movement Matters Association, she is able to help build a community inspired by somatic approaches to healing and creativity. She also supports and participates in the community of dancers of Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms™.
